Walking Trails

The Walks

A scenic path known as 'The Walks' runs parallel to Main Street in Loughrea. Built in 1691, it follows the line of the old town fortifications. It’s also the best place to see Ireland’s only functioning moat, which traces the town’s medieval defences.

Carrabane Forest Walk

Carrabane Forest Walk, just outside Loughrea, offers peaceful trails through native woodland and farmland. It’s a quiet, easy loop, great for a short walk or run, with plenty of birdsong and a mix of open and shaded paths.

Kylebrack Woods

There are four trails of varying lengths, from 1.4 kilometers to 7.4 kilometers. Explore the Coillte pine forests, walk along the banks of the Duniry River, and find the preserved stand of natural oaks and beeches on the longest trek. The deep-rooted trees are covered in moss, giving it an enchanted feeling.
